Fundamental Tree Care Tips for Florida’s Winter
Be Sure to Administer These Tree Services Throughout the Winter Season
Florida’s winters are short and (mostly) mild, but they still bring cooler, drier weather—and the occasional surprise cold snap, especially in the Panhandle and Central Florida. A little seasonal care now helps your trees stay healthy, handle chilly nights, and burst into growth when spring returns. Here’s a practical, Florida-specific guide you can use from December through February.
Water Smarter in the Dry Season
Winter is Florida’s dry season. Even without intense heat, dry wind and low rainfall can stress trees.
- Deep, infrequent watering: For established trees, water deeply every 2–3 weeks if there’s been little or no rain. Aim to moisten the soil 8–12 inches down.
- Young trees need more: Newly planted trees often need weekly watering their first year, tapering during cool spells.
- Water before a freeze: Moist soil holds heat better than dry soil, offering roots a few degrees of protection overnight.
Mulch Like a Pro
Mulch moderates soil temperature, conserves moisture, and shields roots from sudden cold
- Apply 2–4 inches of organic mulch (pine straw, shredded bark, leaves) in a wide donut around the tree.
- Keep mulch 3–6 inches off the trunk to prevent rot and pests.
- Refresh compacted areas so water and air can still reach the soil.
Prune—But Not Recklessly
Winter is excellent for structural pruning on many trees, but timing matters in Florida:
- Remove dead, diseased, and crossing branches anytime.
- Shape young trees for strong structure: Focus on a single central leader and well-spaced scaffold branches to improve wind resilience.
- For palms: Avoid “hurricane cuts.” Remove only completely brown, dead fronds and hanging fruit stalks.
When to Request Professional Tree Service
Bring in a certified arborist if you notice:
- Large dead limbs over walkways or structures
- Cracks or cavities in the trunk
- Leaning trees that have recently moved or show soil heaving
- Recurring pest or nutrient issues despite good care
